J.J. Murphy: A Successful City Manager

It takes quite a bit to be a city manager. There is a large amount of responsibility which goes into managing an entire city, such as infrastructure issues, budget control, and leadership ability. Luckily, J.J. Murphy has had plenty of previous experience with city management.

J.J. Murphy and New Mexico are now familiar with each other, but his previous experience working as the city manager of Wilkes-Barre has helped him to manage the city of Hobbs. In Wilkes-Barre, J.J. Murphy had a multitude of different responsibilities to take on. When he first started working for the city of Wilkes-Barre, he had to overcome a large financial deficit. The city had $101 million worth of unpaid bills. He helped the city to receive a financial turnaround of $50 million. J.J. Murphy created a five year recovery plan for the city of Wilkes-Barre.

In addition, J.J. Murphy helped with the infrastructure of the city of Wilkes-Barre. He not only updated the infrastructure of Wilkes-Barre, but he added in crucial security systems to prevent crime and keep the area a safer environment. J.J. Murphy had a playground installed in one of the poorest areas of Wilkes-Barre which cost $250 million. 

Another improvement that J.J. Murphy made was in helping the city to become one of the most technologically advanced in the state. Wilkes-Barre was one of the least technologically advanced cities of Pennsylvania until he became the city manager.

Currently, J.J. Murphy is the city manager of Hobbs, New Mexico. He is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the city. Another one of his major responsibilities is to bring the vision of the city into fruition. He works with Department Heads and makes recommendations as well as decisions on providing necessary resources for roughly 470 city employees.

J.J. Murphy believes that the most important part of managing a city is to serve the people. Having sufficient police officers, firefighters, and ambulance crews is highly important to J.J. Murphy. He also believes in recycling effluent water, cleaning parks, enforcing building codes, and creating standards for contractors in Hobbs, New Mexico. With the way that he is working to benefit the community, J.J. Murphy and Hobbs, New Mexico are going to work well together. 

Being a city manager isn’t easy, but J.J. Murphy has the necessary experience to run one. As the former city manager of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, J.J. Murphy is not going to let the city of Hobbs down.
